Meanwhile, up on Sweetbriar Hill, another loss was taking place.

“He passed,” said Dr. Baxter Simms in the vast foyer of Sweetbriar Manor. “Where’s that no-good son of his?” he asked housekeeper Lola Marsh.

“Why, Mister Chester’s… out of town,” said Lola.

“In somebody else,” said Chester’s drunk wife, Anabelle. “Betraying me. As usual. I’m sure he’ll be distraught when he hears Daddy dear has bit the dust while he was out philandering.”

The physician asked with clear disdain, “Will you notify Chester, or shall I?”

“Whatever. It’ll go to voice mail either way. He won’t pick up. Chester can’t hear a sound or see a sight or even breathe a breath unless his father tells him how… Well, don’t look so surprised I said it. Everybody knows it’s true. Chess never even tried to love nobody but hisself.” She gulped another swig of brandy, breathed it into Simms’s gaunt face. “He’ll go to pieces over this, but Lola here will clean them up. I’ll let him know you dropped by, Doc, but didn’t do no good.”
